How Does Acupuncture Work?

The art of acupuncture is the art of influencing the energy that flows throughout our bodies' meridian pathways.

Every human being is born with a similar body in that every human body has the same meridian pathways.

We are all unique, but we all also have some things in common - these energy pathways are something that everyone has in common.

Acupuncture works by carefully and craftfully inserting small needles into certain acu-points on the body, or points where the meridian lines within us come in contact with the skin.

Although there are meridians pretty much all over our bodies, they are all in very precise places and in order to address certain problems, you must influence certain meridians.

The Flow of Chi Through Our Meridian Points

Energy flows throughout our bodies constantly.

Unfortunately, sometimes it gets blocked up or disrupted. This usually happens when negative events occur in our lives that create negative emotional reactions within us.

For instance, if you just found out that one of your parents or siblings has cancer, or even just died in a car accident, that would create a powerful emotional disruption in your energy system - at least for most people.

However, it doesn't have to be as profound as someone dying.

In fact, every day we are bombarded with negative events that change our emotions and thus change the flow of energy through our acupuncture points.

For instance, can you remember the last time you were angry?

How about the last time you were annoyed? Or the last time you felt a little depressed?

All of the above examples, and so many more, are ways in which our energy is disrupted.

Everyone has heard that stress can cause heart disease, or fatigue, or even raise your risk of cancer.

The reason that this is true is that every negative emotional incident in our lives contributes to.

Blocked or Disrupted Chi (Disrupted Life Energy)

Acupuncture works by inserting needles into these specific points on the body, 'forcing' the energy through these points to either increase or decrease.

If the practitioner knows what he is doing, and can determine the correct acupuncture (or acupressure) points to insert the needles into, success is almost guaranteed.

Many times success in acupuncture revolves around whether or not the needles are applied to the correct meridians and the correct points on each meridian.

For example, I may have a migraine that is associated with hypothetical Meridian A that flows through my head down to my arm.

If the practitioner decides that he wants to stick a needle into a point on the meridian line of Meridian B which may be all the way down on my leg, it will probably have no effect on my migraine.

Only by balancing the energy in the correct meridian can we facilitate the healing of specific problems. I sometimes refer to this as the Rule of Being Specific.

However, there are some.

Exceptions to the Rule of Being Specific

It is important to find and treat the correct points on the body with acupuncture needles.

BUT that does not mean that to treat any other points on the body is completely useless - far from it.

In reality all of the meridians and all of the energy that flows throughout our bodies are connected.

Treating the wrong acupuncture point is not comparable to treating an illness with the wrong medication.

No, the energy meridians are far more versatile than that.

Instead, think of the separate meridian lines as similar to our bodies? vital organs. They are all separate, but all connected.

Influencing and healing one of them therefore influences all of them, but in more subtle ways.

Eventually, healing of the vital life energy within us (traditionally called Chi or Qi by the ancient Chinese) will lead to.

Physical Healing and Bodily Change

Yes, acu-techniques and treatment with needles often leads to physical healing.

If it didn't, would there be thousands of satisfied patients all over the world? I don't think so.

Well, it does work! Healing our energy systems leads to physical healing over time, or sometimes instantly.

There are even stories of people being cured of diseases or health conditions that scientists have called "incurable."
